Quick Assessment of Your Organization’s Leaders

journal with questions to ask to assess the leaders in your organization

As we approach the second half of the year, it’s time to take a hard look at the leaders in your organization. Are they truly the right people to propel your company forward, or are they holding you back?

It’s easy to get complacent, or to fall into the sunk-cost fallacy where you know how expensive they were to hire and how difficult it can be to hire someone new. However, the cost of ineffective leadership is too high to ignore. You need leaders who deliver results, energize their teams, and tackle problems head-on without constantly looking to you for answers. Otherwise, you’re creating more problems for yourself and your organization than you’re solving.

But how do you know if the leaders you’ve hired are living up to expectation? Or even further, their potential?

I want to share a quick yet crucial, quick check-up tool with you. This is a set of questions I put together with insights I’ve soaked up from thousands of conversations with C-suite leaders over the years.

Regular evaluation is key. Here are five incisive questions you can ask yourself to help you quickly assess their effectiveness.

  1. Are They Delivering Results?
    • Question: Have they consistently met or exceeded their performance targets and contributed positively to the organization’s strategic goals?
    • Purpose: This question helps evaluate whether the leader is effective in achieving tangible outcomes and driving the business forward.
  2. Do they bring positive energy to the team, or do they drain it?
    • Question: Are they a net positive influence on the team’s morale, productivity, and results?
    • Purpose: A leader who consistently brings energy and hard work on the right things can elevate the entire team’s performance, while one who drains energy can hinder progress and cause missed goals.
  3. Do They Proactively Solve Problems?
    • Question: Do they see a problem and work to find a solution, or do they look to you to solve it?
    • Purpose: Leaders who solve problems independently foster innovation and efficiency, reducing dependency on higher management.
  4. Are They Adaptable and Forward-Thinking?
    • Question: Do they demonstrate the ability to adapt to changes, anticipate future challenges, and drive innovation within their area of responsibility?
    • Purpose: In a rapidly changing business environment, leaders must be agile, innovative, and proactive in addressing new challenges and opportunities.
  5. Do They Exhibit Strong Decision-Making and Problem-Solving Skills?
    • Question: Do they consistently make sound decisions and effectively solve problems, even under pressure?
    • Purpose: Effective decision-making and problem-solving are critical for leaders at all levels, as they directly impact the organization’s performance and resilience.

By asking yourself these critical questions, you can quickly determine if your leaders are assets or liabilities. It’s time to cut through the noise and ensure that every leader in your organization is driving performance. If they don’t measure up, it’s time to act.
